Beyond the Family Home: Finding Hope in Special Needs Housing

Special Needs Parents Share Their Stories and Lessons Learned

For parents of adult children with special needs, the decision to pursue special needs residential living can be one of the most emotional transitions a family will ever experience.

It’s a decision often accompanied by fear, uncertainty, guilt, and countless questions. Will they be happy? Will they receive the care and attention they need? Will they adjust to their new surroundings? And perhaps the hardest question of all: Are we doing the right thing?

For this KevAdvoTech podcast, I invited two moms from The Villages, Florida, Susan Collins and Rhonda Sherrer, to share their personal experiences navigating this important transition.

We talk about the emotions leading up to the move, the challenges and surprises along the way, and the lessons they’ve learned. Most importantly, both moms reflect on the emotional challenges of the transition, the lessons they learned along the way, and why they remain confident that moving their loved ones into residential living was the right decision for their families.

Special Needs Residential Living: Lessons From Parents Who’ve Been There

Their stories offer a perspective that can be especially meaningful to parents who are beginning to consider residential living but aren’t quite sure what to expect or how to prepare.

My hope is that this conversation helps families recognize that moving beyond the family home doesn’t have to mean leaving something behind. It can also mean opening the door to a wonderful new chapter for their loved one.

I invite you to watch our conversation below.
